A CORPUS BASED STUDY OF EXPLICITATION IN PAKISTANI LITERARY TEXT

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the explicitation shifts in the translated novel ―Hollow Pursuits‖ and same novel as LaHasil in Urdu as source text (ST) to define the effect of explicitation on the translated or target text (TT). The explicitation level is subdivided into a two main level ‗substitution and addition‘. A valid framework adapted for the explicitation shifts investigation in the text. To analyze the explicitation in text a corpus based methodology is undertaken. The research explained the findings both quantitatively and qualitatively. Results show that, among three types of explicitation, namely obligatory explicitation, optional explicitation and pragmatic explicitation, optional explicitation makes up the overwhelming majority with maximum occurrences. Obligatory explicitation occurrences are relatively low whereas pragmatic explicitation scores are the lowest in proportion. The major significance of the study is that it is explaining the required level of explicitation in translation to make it more appropriate and reader friendly in Pakistan.
