The Traditions about First Compiler of the Quran: Reconciliation and meaningfulness

Abstract

The question that who was the first compiler of the Quran is very important and to some extent critical as this question directly relates to preservation and protection of the Quranic text from any amendment, deviation and addition. There are nine traditions that reveals different personalities as first compiler of the Quran including the last Prophet s.a.w. The article is aimed to reconcile the difference of traditions by figuring out of the real meanings of “jam’ al-Quran”. Some critic has also been made on the chains of narrations and attempted to evaluate the authenticity of the chain of narrations in the light of comments of ancient scholars. The article gives an impression that all traditions can be woven in a one silky thread of meaningfulness and all discrepancies and contradictions are apparent.
