Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ in Shar‘ī Perspective

Abstract

‘Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ (UDHR) is the outcome of western nations’ centuries of struggle which was approved in Paris on 10^th of September 1948 in the context of World War I and II. Words and statements that cover 30 of its articles are carefully constructed in order for it to make it feasible for most of the nations of the world to follow. However, there are numerous words and statements that are equivocal and therefore those in power sometimes interpret them in a manner that suits them and their ideologies. Apparently, most of its articles conform to Islāmic guidelines as well, but 6 to 7 articles contain issues that appear to differentiate between Islāmic and Western idea of human rights and therefore are alien to Islām. This treatise seeks to highlight all such differences that are part of this charter.
