Analytical Study of the impact of Qira’āt of the Qur’ān on Rasm al-Muṣḥaf
Abstract
The Qur’ān is the only Scripture of Allāh Almighty which is preserved by writing and memorizing in the very same manner as it was revealed on the Prophet (ﷺ). As far as the compilation of this Heavenly Scripture is concerned, the whole Qur’ān was written on various objects during the era of the Prophet (ﷺ) but it was preserved between the two covers in the reign of Haḍrat Abū Bakr Ṣiddique (May Allāh be pleased with him). Afterwards, when the dispute of Qira’āt arose among the Muslim ummāh, the third Caliph Haḍrat ʿUthmān (May Allāh be pleased with him) concurred Ummat al-Muḥammadiyyā on a unanimous Rasm to avoid disruption. Rasm means: Those inscribed alphabets which denote some connotation. Terminologically, it is the methodology used by Haḍrat ʿUthmān (May Allāh be pleased with him) and his companions for the compilation of the Qur’ānic words and inscription of the Qur’ānic letters in the Scripture. This script is also termed as Rasm al-ʿUthmānī. The Rasm used in the manuscripts of Haḍrat ʿUthmān (May Allāh be pleased with him) comprised of all the recognized Qira’āt. Even it became obligatory for any Qira’āt (reading) to be declared as Mutwātirāh that it had been propitious to Rasm al-ʿUthmānī. Considering the significance of this Rasm, the scholars declared its opposition as forbidden. The Qira’āt of the Qur’an influenced the Rasm al-ʿUthmānī in three ways:
