Style of the Citation of the Sources of Tradition And Narration of Tradition in the Commentary of the Holy Quran (In the Context of the Exegesis Lite

Abstract

Quran is the last revealed book from almighty Allah carries principle guidelines for every sphere of life. It is an Arabic text, thus needed comprehensive understanding to cater the need of the people. The said thirst for understanding of the Quran acts as an important catalyst for the exegeses writing. Since the era of the Prophet, Quran is the main subject of study to address the various issues for Muslims whether philosophical or practical. Commentaries of Quran in the contemporary age, usually formed by Quoting Ahadith (Traditions of Prophet PBUH), quotes of companions of Prophet PBUH and quotes of the followers of companions of Prophet PBUH. It is the most popular trend in commentary writing. Such commentaries are known as Tafseer Bilma’thoor. Quoting only authentic Ahadith in the light of principles of Ahadith, is an accepted trend. While reproducing traditions in abundance without giving much importance to their authenticity or validity is a marked aspect of others. A few commentaries are full of weak, fabricated and Israelite traditions and the condition regarding the mentioning of sources of citation is also not enviable. The dissertation under consideration covers the literature of Ma’thoor commentaries of the sub-continent, analyzes the assumptions made in the above paragraphs and presents the critical and researched analysis of the different ways of citing traditions. This study will be helpful to create awareness among the readers and researchers of Mathoor commentaries of the sub-continent.
