Islamic Teachings Regarding Dowry: A Statistical Review of the Relatives-In-Law of Bride

Abstract

The issue of dowry is directly related to the socio-religious and economic traditions of any of the concerned societies. Family system, social rituals and marriage customs are found in every religion. So far as the Muslim scholars are concerned, they are of the same view about the concept of dowry. They collectively believe that dowry is an immoral and economic burden on the family of the bride. In this background, dowry has always been an important matter for the people of Pakistan. It is necessary to understand that dowry is not an Islamic concept. This misconception has been prevailing in numerous societies that dowry is one of the essential part of religion. In this perspective, it is the dire need of the hour to highlight the status of dowry according to Islam. Some of the Muslims think that dowry is the Sunna of the Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). On the other hand, some Muslim families consider dowry as an alternate of the right of heritage of the bride. Therefore, it is highly necessary to know and understand its chronological history, its beginning and updated evolution. In this regard, a statistical analysis has been conducted in Gujranwala and Gujrat districts. The study found that majority of the respondents are of the opinion that dowry plays a key role in leading a happy, prosper and stable life for a bride in her In-laws. The current social situation is an outcome of the misconception of the Islamic teachings. This research article has been presented to determine and remove the controversies and misunderstandings of the common man related to the concept of dowry with special reference to Islam
