Style of the Criticism of the Traditions by Imam Tahavi

Abstract

  Imam Abu Jafar Ṭaḥāwī was a great traditionist and scholar of Fiqh because he made a great contribution in both Hadith and fiqh. In this article his method of criticism has been discussed with examples from his book Sharaḥ M’āni al-Athār. It is a reality that there are different principles to understand the source of hadith. So, if a scholar does not have proper knowledge about it he will not be able to solve the matters positively. Imam Ṭaḥāwī used different methods to identify the reasons of not accepting the traditions. He identified and stated different points to judge whether it is up to the mark or not. If a tradition is against the reality of daily routine or fact Imam Ṭaḥāwī object it and do not give it the weight to be observed. Similarly, if the tradition has some ambiguity in its chain, he rejects it and adopts the alternate. Sometimes, imam Ṭaḥāwī explain and determine the meaning of text to resolve the problem regarding contradictory situation.
