Orientalism on Muhammad: A Historical Sketch

Abstract

In the course of history orientalists have produced a massive literature on the personality of the Prophet of Islam. This paper gives an inclusive historical account of their studies on the subject. It traces the ideas of a large number of prominent orientalists on different aspects of Sirah. It finds that primarily Prophet Muhammad was very much maligned by the orientalists. They developed very malicious accounts on the personality and character of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Later on some tried to remove the historical inferior allegations but malevolent approach about Muhammad didn’t remove. Even in the latest orientalist studies on Sirah the traditional orientalist’s spiteful approach is seemed to be involved.
